Doha: India’s peddlers completed WTT contender Doha 2022 with two medals, including the single bronze won by Achanta Sharath KamalAs the seniors showed the way on the closing day of the competition.
As expected, G. Sathian And Manika Batra Lin Yun-ju and Cheng I-ching settled for silver after losing in the mixed doubles final against top-ranked Chinese Taipei pair. The Indians lost 4-11, 5-11, 3-11.
Sharath Kamal, on the other hand, failed to advance from an advantageous position in the sixth game and went on to fight 3-4 (5-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5, 10). -12, 9-11 in the men’s singles semifinals against China’s Yuan Lysen.
This was the first medal for Sharath in two years. The Indian legend won gold at the 2020 Oman Open.
The No. 7 Indian mixed pair found it difficult against the Taipei combine from the start. Their difficulties were exacerbated when Sathian and Manika failed to understand the left-right combination that was clinically about work.
Nevertheless, it was credible for the Indians to resist as much as possible before finally surrendering to the Taipei peddlers.
But Sharath will regret his missed opportunity on the day when he will have rhythm and form by his side. Trailing 1-2, the top-ranked Indian (No. 41) bounced back strongly, leading 3-2 against the 264th-ranked Chinese.
In the sixth game, Sharath was leading 9-7 but he missed his chances and let Lyson out of the hook. The Chinese not only reduced margins but were at game-point. Sharath managed to deuce but failed to retain his all, causing his opponent to score exactly.
In the decisive match, Sharath once again led 6-4. But he could not maintain it and the confident Chinese maintained the lead before completing the task without giving his rival a chance.
“I should have summed it up in the sixth game,” admitted Sharath, who recently underwent knee surgery. But Sharath was happy with his form, especially his backhand.
“I’m glad I finished on the podium (bronze) and will take the form from here to the next tournament,” he added.
