UP Warriors thrashed defending champions Bengal Warriors 40-36 in the 69th match of Pro Kabaddi League Season 8 at The Sheraton Grand in Whitefield here on Friday.
Their defensive corner pair of Sumit and Nitesh Kumar scored seven points while Raiders Pardeep Narwal and Surender Gill scored nine points. The win helped the Warriors finish fourth in the points table with 38 points from 12 matches.
Bengal at one point relied heavily on Captain Maninder Singh who scored 19 raid points in the losing cause.
The first half was very tense as both teams were hitting each other in the opening minutes. But the defensive pair of UP warriors Sumit and Nitesh Kumar were in wonderful form as they thwarted the Bengal attackers. At the other end, Pardeep Narwal quickly stole points from the Warriors’ defense and led his team.
But the defending champions showed strong resistance to UP’s dominance by delaying the all-out. Maninder Singh led the mini-revival with a 3-point super raid, but the Warriors kept up the pressure to be all out within four minutes of the final interval. Their lead was immediately reduced by Maninder’s 2-point raid as the half ended 19-18 in favor of the Warriors.
The warrior’s defense dominated the opening minutes of the second half. Sumit was constantly holding the ankle of Bengal’s Maninder Singh as his teammate Nitesh Kumar came in from the right corner. Together they remained unbeaten and ensured that Bengal remained on the backfoot. The trio of raiders – Srikanth Jadhav, Pardeep Narwal and Surender Gill – ensured that points were added to the warrior’s tally. They made their second all-out with eight minutes left to open a 7-point lead.
Bengal’s Maninder Singh got his Super 10 to ensure he survived the hunt despite having two all-outs. He made it a four-point game with three minutes left but Gaurav Kumar’s stunning super tackle on it gave the warrior a little space to breathe. Their defenders calmed down in the last minute and leapfrogged Bengal to the points table.
