A child learns by picking up habits from his social environment. As a toddler, their social group may be limited to caregivers, but it is from them that the child acquires new skills and abilities and develops self-confidence.

According to an interview with Hindustan Times, child psychologist, Nidhi Tiwari said, “Self-confidence is the greatest gift parents can give their children.”

She explains that it is important to instill small habits in children from a young age so that they can build their confidence as they grow up.

Check out these few tips that can help you boost your child’s confidence –

Encourage your child
At every stage of life a child learns something new. As a toddler, their first steps, first words, and holding a cup will be new and exciting. It is important that you as a parent teach them, support them, praise their efforts and encourage them whenever they try something new. It will boost their self-esteem and boost their confidence and keep them motivated. Make sure you don’t praise your child too much because it sounds hollow and fake.

Don’t compare
Every child is unique and has a different set of talents. Comparing them to their siblings or peers will lower their self-esteem and they may develop an inferiority complex. Such comparisons can cause anger, emotional stress, grief and anxiety in your child which can affect their personal development. Focus on your child’s strengths and ban harsh criticism.

Be a good role model
Parents serve as the best role models for children and young children often imitate their parents. If your child sees you struggling with everyday tasks like making your bed, cleaning the dishes, etc., you are setting an example. Your child will also learn from you and at the same time they will try in their tasks like cleaning toys, doing homework, making the bed etc.

Give them small responsibilities
You can assign small tasks to your children such as asking them to make their bed or feed themselves. This will give them a sense of responsibility. It will boost their confidence and make them more responsible. They will learn the value of hard work and grow up to be independent.
