Thomas Cup winner Satviksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty dropped out of Thailand Open

The star doubles duo of Satviksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who played a key role in India’s historic Thomas Cup victory, have been knocked out of the Thailand Open Super 500 tournament starting on Tuesday.

It is learned that Chirag had to face some difficulties during the tournament and the duo informed the Indian Badminton Association on Monday about their decision to skip the event this week.

The world No. 8 pair lost just one match against Chinese Taipei in the Thomas Cup and brought India back into the fray after an early reversal against Malaysia and Denmark in the quarter-finals and semifinals.

Among the other Indians on the field, World Championship silver medalist Kidambi Srikkanth, ranked eighth, who was unbeaten with six wins in the Thomas Cup, will face Bryce Leverdez, while HS Pranoy, who won the decisive third singles knockout. Stage meets Darren Leon of Malaysia.

Tokyo Olympian B Sai Praneeth will face Koki Watanabe of Japan while Saurabh Varma will face Toma Jr. Popov of France.

In the women’s singles, double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will play the qualifier, while Saina Nehwal will face Korea’s Kim Ga-in.

In the men’s doubles, MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Gowda Panjla, Shyam Prasad and S Sunijit, Manu Atri and B Sumit Atri, Ishaan Bhatnagar and Sai Pratik K are in the field.

Palak Arora and Unnati Hooda, Harita Manazil Harinarayanan and Aashna Roy, Ashwini Bhatt K and Shikha Gautam will be seen in the women’s doubles to compete above their weight.

B Sumit Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa, Raju Mohammad Rehan and Jamaluddin Anees Kovsar, Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Krasto, Venkat Gaurav Prasad and Juhi Devangan will lead the Indian charge in mixed doubles.
