Soccer-PSG beat Brest 2-0 to restore 11-point lead at the top

Paris Saint-Germain regained an unstable start to take an 11-point lead in League 1 as they were led by Kylian Mbappe and Thilo Kehrer in their 2-0 home win over Stade Brestois on Saturday.

Mbappe and Kehrer met on both sides of the net behind the net and Moody’s side were on 50 points in 21 one-day games after beating second-placed Nice Nantes 2-1.

The result left Brest in 13th place with 25 points.

If they beat champion Lille at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday, they will move up to 39 points with third-placed Olympique de Marseille Nice.

RC Lens is in fourth place with 33 points after the Northern players won a 2-1 comeback at the bottom of St. Etienne early Saturday with a stoppage-time goal from Seco Fofana.

At Park des Princess, PSG were missing Lionel Messi, still recovering from a COVID-19 infection, and the last-minute absence of goalkeeper Keller Navas, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

PSG had won their previous eight league games against Brest but the visitors got off to a good start and Gianluigi Donarumma had a big save for rejecting Irwin Cardona early on.

Brest, in search of his first top flight win against PSG since 1985, had three shots on target in the opening 20 minutes.

However, it was Mbappe who broke the deadlock for his 10th League 1 goal of the season with a 16-meter clinical low shot with a 32nd clinical low shot as PSG increased the pressure.

Marco Verratti came close to doubling the lead in the third minute of the second half but his angular shot hit the post.

PSG’s German defender Kehrer finally fired from the cutback of Nuno Mendes in the 53rd minute to give him a 2-0 lead.

Kehrer and Mbappe, who were booked for a scuffle with Hugo Magnetti in the first half, had other chances but Mauricio Pochettino’s side had already wrapped up a regular victory.
