India’s Sania Mirza and her American partner Rajiv Ram advanced to the mixed doubles quarterfinals of the Australian Open with straight sets wins against Ellen Perez and Matthew Middlecoop here on Sunday. The unseeded Indo-American pair took an hour and 27 minutes to beat Australian Perez and Dutch Middlecoop 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 in the second round match on Court 3.

Mirza and Ram will now face off against the winners of the second round, the all-Australian tie between Sam Stosur and Matthew Abden and Jamie Forlis and Jason Kubler in the quarterfinals.

Mirza and Ram defeated Alexandra Krunik and Nikola Kasik of Serbia in the first round.

Earlier this week, six-time Grand Slam winner Mirza was knocked out in the first round of the women’s doubles event.

Mirza, who will retire after the 2022 season, is the only Indian left on the field in the first Grand Slam of the season after Rohan Bopanna and his Croatian teammate Darija Jurak Shrebar were knocked out in the first round of the mixed doubles event on Saturday.
