Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri knocked out in first round qualifying matches

India’s singles players again failed to cross the qualifying hurdle at the Grand Slam stage as both Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri were knocked out of the Wimbledon Championship with defeats in the first round.

Bhambri lost 5-7 1-6 to top seed Bernabe Zapata Mirales of Spain on Monday night while Ramkumar lost 5-7 4-6 to Vit Copriva of the Czech Republic.

The 29-year-old Bhambri started flying as he got an early break in the opening set and at one point he was leading 5-3.

However, Bhambri lost two set points despite being in an advantageous position and it was Mirales who took the lead.

However, the second set was tough and Bhambri was out of the grass court competition.

Ramanathan, on the other hand, clashed with India’s No. 1 ranked tennis player, No. 19 Kopriva, and the script turned out to be something like that.

Ramanathan, 27, seemed comfortable, thanks to his aces and winners but lost steam soon after losing the opening set.

He made a desperate attempt to level things up and take a 3-1 lead in the second but Copriva won four games in a row to regain control of the proceedings.

With the defeat of both Bhambri and Ramanathan, Sania Mirza, who is on tour in her last year, is the only Indian confirmed to play in SW19 this year.

The 35-year-old former doubles world number one will be ready to watch in the women’s doubles draw with her partner Lucy Hradeka of the Czech Republic.

Rohan Bopanna has decided not to play in the event as ATP is not offering points this year as Russian and Belarusian players have been banned from participating in the tournament by the organizers following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
