New Delhi: Indian women boxers Neetu (48 kg) and Manisha (57kg) advanced to the quarterfinals of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul after a convincing victory on Saturday.
Participating in the event for the first time, Neetu won 5-0 over Spain Marta Lopez del Arbol In the lowest weight range to go to the last-eight stages.
Manisha, on the other hand, won 4-1 Svetlana Staneva Bulgaria featherweight to advance to quarterfinals.
A two-time former Youth World Champion, Neetu showcased her technical prowess as she maintained her upper hand throughout the bout.
The 21-year-old from Haryana used her long reach for good effect as she punched some powerful punches.
The reigning national champions will face Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova in the quarterfinals on Monday.
Manisha, the bronze medalist of the 2019 Asian Championships, was engaged in a draining and awkward bout in which she also had a fair share of clutter, holding and some complications in the ring.
The 24-year-old will face a tough challenge from Youth World Bronze medalist Namun Monkhor of Mongolia in the quarterfinals next Monday.
Two-time Asian champion Pooja Rani (81kg) entered the quarterfinals on Friday.
On Sunday, six Indian boxers will be in action in the round-of-16 bouts.
Nikhat Zareen (52kg) and Shiksha (54kg) will face off against Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg and young Asian bronze medalist Yesuzen Oyantsetseg respectively, while Parveen will face former USA Olympian J જmtz Oliz.
Anamika (50kg) will take on World Championship bronze medalist Christy Lee Harris of Australia, while Jasmine (60kg) will take on Angela Harris of Australia.
Meanwhile, 2017 Youth World Champion Ankushita (66kg) will begin her campaign against Poland’s Aneta Rigilska.
