Naomi Osaka clears Camilla Osorio in the Melbourne Park opener

Defending champion Naomi Osaka overcame an unexpected challenge from Colombia’s Camilla Osorio 6-3 6-3 in the second round of the Australian Open at the Road Laver Arena on Monday.

The Japanese former world number one was seen in all business as she ran for a 5-0 lead in the opening set but a first-serve catch encouraged Osorio, who then began to chase everything Osaka threw at him.

Osaka needed to save two break points to maintain service for the first set and face two more in the second stenza before overcoming the inexperienced world number 50 with their offensive shots from the baseline.

“It’s always special to be back here,” said the 13th-ranked player, who will next face Dayana Yastramska or Madison Brengle as she seeks her third Melbourne Park title.

“I thought she was playing wonderful. Overall, I’m glad to be here, I’m glad to see everyone in the audience and I hope we’ve had a great time. “
