Charles Lacklerk lived up to his status as master of the poles by pulling a flying lap out of his bag on Saturday, qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this season.

The Ferrari driver, registering his fourth consecutive pole and sixth pole of the season, joins the front row for Sunday’s race through Sergio Perez’s Red Bull.

Perez, who last won out on the streets of the Azerbaijani capital 12 months ago and in Monaco, once again surpassed his world champion teammate Max Verstapen.

Verstappen starts in the second row with Carlos Sanz in the second Ferrari.

“It feels good,” said the seemingly thrilled Leclerc.

“All the poles look good, but I didn’t expect that. I thought the Red Bulls were stronger in the first and second qualifying seasons but in the last lap everything came together. “

Leclerc had a healthy lead in the championship after the fifth race in Australia but is nine points behind Verstappen in this eighth round of the season, while Perez is just six points behind in third place.

He’s desperate to regain the title momentum on Sunday, saying: “I’m really excited for tomorrow.”
