Lucie Gonzalez hired as US assistant, switching with Estavez

CHICAGO: Lucie Gonzalez was appointed as Greg Berhalter’s assistant coach on Saturday, replacing Nico Astways with the US men’s national soccer team.

Gonzalez, 41, coached the Dallas team of Major League Soccer on December 16, 2018, and was sacked on September 19 after the team had six wins, 11 defeats and nine draws in the league this season.

Astways, who has been Barhalter’s assistant since 2019, was appointed head coach of Dallas on Thursday.

Gonzalez joined the Dallas academy as an under-18 coach in 2012 and spent three years as the academy’s director before being promoted to first-team coach.

A dual citizen of the US and Peru, he was on the American team at the 1997 Under-17 World Championships. Gonzalez played for Southern Methodist and won the 2001 Herman Trophy College Soccer Player of the Year.

He played professionally for San Jose (2002), Sweden’s Bodens (2003), Peru’s Sporting Crystal (2004), Colorado (2005-06), second-tier Miami (2007) and second-tier Minnesota (2008).
