Legal action ‘option’ for Bhaichung Bhutia after AIFF ExCo rejects request to discuss Shaji Prabhakaran’s appointment

The former India Captain Bhaichung Bhutia on Monday said he may explore legal options after the All India Football Federation (AIFF) rejected his request for a discussion on Shaji Prabhakaran’s appointment as general secretary during the executive committee meeting.

Prabhakaran, who was in the electoral college as Football Delhi’s representative, was made the AIFF Secretary General when former India goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey defeated Bhutia 33–1 in the presidential election on 2 September.

Bhutia alleged that appointing an elector to a salaried post in the federation was an element of “bargaining”. He requested the AIFF to include Prabhakaran’s appointment in the agenda of the executive committee meeting held on Monday.

“I attended the AIFF Executive Committee meeting today but my request to discuss Shaji’s appointment as Secretary General was turned down. I raised the issue, but they said they will only focus on the agenda and there will be no discussion on that issue,” Bhutia told PTI.

“I am very disappointed. I had made the request two-three days earlier but it was not included in the agenda of the meeting.

Asked if he would take legal recourse over the matter, Bhutia said, “That is an option I will keep. I will consult my people and decide the future course of action.

Bhutia, 45, the poster boy of Indian football until his retirement in 2011, as AIFF secretary general, repeated his allegations of possible “deal-making” in the appointment of Prabhakaran, a former FIFA regional development officer for South and Central Asia. .

“He (Prabhakaran) was a voter in AIFF elections, (Kalyan) Chaubey’s election agent and president of an association (Football Delhi). A wrong precedent has been set by appointing him to a salaried post.

“I wouldn’t have had a problem if he had been appointed to an honorary post. Next time, people will make a deal to vote for a salaried post after the election.”
