FC Goa snatched their four-match unbeaten streak after a 1-0 win over Chennai FC in the 2021-22 Indian Super League 2021-22 at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim. The result rejects Marina Machans from breaking the top-four positions in the points table.
Jorge Ortiz (82 ‘) broke the deadlock with a long-range goal late in the game. A solitary goal from the Spaniard was enough to get three points.
It took both teams a while to get into any kind of rhythm in the attack. Edwin Vanspool was shown an early yellow card as the match began amid fierce physical clashes. The first big chance of the game was given to George Ortiz in the 18th minute but Debjit Majumdar closed the gap inside the penalty box for a brave save. Debutant Anwar Ali headed a header from a corner just five minutes after the half-hour mark.
Gaurus controlled more balls in the first half and was more likely to score the first goal of the night. Glenn Martins tested the goalkeeper from a long distance before Ortiz hit a rebound in side netting. Derrick Pereira’s men threw everything at the Marina Machans but their compact defense didn’t get an answer which meant both teams went on a halftime break on level terms.
The FCG started the second half by pushing for an opener. Edu Bedia came close to scoring an Olympic goal by striking out his corner kick post. The midfielder was shown a yellow card a few minutes later for a dangerous tackle on Narijus Valskis. Vladimir Koman was later removed due to injury and was replaced by Jarmanpreet Singh. As the match reached the hourly mark, it was a pro traffic that was dominated by FCG and created more scoring opportunities than CFC.
Naveen Kumar was finally called into action when he made a crucial save from Mirlan Murzayev at the 75th minute mark. However, it took George Ortiz’s magic moment to break the deadlock. The forward traversed the back of the net with a sensational left-footed strike from a long distance, trapping the goalkeeper. His goal became the winner and gave Gaurus three well-deserved points.
Chennai FC will take on Hyderabad FC in their next match at the PJN Stadium on Thursday while FC Goa will take on Northeast United at the Athletic Stadium on Friday.
