International Olympic Committee boycotts US diplomacy of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Monday it respects the US government’s announcement of a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

“The presence of government officials and diplomats is a purely political decision for every government, which the IOC fully respects in its political neutrality,” an IOC spokesman told AFP.

The diplomatic boycott is a measured rebuke of China’s human rights record that prevents US athletes from competing.

The decision comes after Washington spent months squabbling over its place in next year’s February Games, accusing the country of committing “genocide” against Uighur Muslims in northwestern Xinjiang.

There was no immediate reaction from Beijing, but earlier on Monday the Chinese Foreign Ministry threatened a “definitive retaliation” if such a boycott was implemented.

The IOC said the US government’s announcement “made it clear that the participation of the Olympic Games and athletes is beyond politics and we welcome it.”

“Support for athletes and the Olympic Games has been expressed many times in recent months, most recently by the United Nations resolution ‘Building a peaceful and better world through sport and Olympic ideals’.

The IOC said the resolution was adopted unanimously by all 193 member states and was co-sponsored by 173 member states at the UN General Assembly last week.

It calls for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Beijing to adhere to the Olympic Truss for 2022, seven days before the start of the Olympic Games, on February 4, 2022, seven days until the end of the Paralympic Games.

The resolution also called on all member states to co-operate with the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee in their efforts to use the sport to promote peace, dialogue and reconciliation in conflict zones during and after the Olympics. Paralympic Games “.
