Inflammation of the heart after covid vaccination is rare: The Lancet study

Research confirms that the risk of myopicarditis is comparable or lower than that of other non-Covid-19 vaccines after Covid-19 vaccination.
The team analyzed international databases by looking at more than 400 million doses of vaccine to compare the risk of myopicarditis after vaccination against Covid-19 and other diseases such as influenza and smallpox.
They found no statistically significant difference between the incidence of myopicarditis after the Covid-19 vaccination – 18 cases per million doses – and other vaccinations, which were 56 cases per million doses.

Myopicarditis can, in some cases, cause severe permanent heart damage. It is mostly caused by a virus but in rare cases can occur even after vaccination.
There have been reports of myopicarditis after mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccination, especially in adolescents and young adults.
The researchers analyzed more than 20 studies with reported cases of myopericarditis after any type of vaccination between January 1947 and December 2021.
Among the Covid-19 vaccines, those who received the mRNA vaccine had a higher risk of myopericarditis than the non-mRNA vaccines (7.9 cases per 1 million dose), the researchers said.
They said that cases under the age of 30 (40.9 cases per million doses), men (23 cases per million doses), and cases after the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine (31.1 cases per 1 million doses) were even higher.
“The occurrence of myopicarditis after non-Covid-19 vaccination indicates that myopicarditis is a side effect of any vaccine-induced inflammatory processes and is not unique to Covid-19 vaccines or the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in infections,” he said. “This also highlights that the risks of such frequent adverse events should be offset by the benefits of vaccination, which include lower risk of infection, hospitalization, serious illness and death from Covid-19,” Somani said.
Researchers acknowledge some limitations with their study.
They noted that their findings included only a small proportion of children under the age of 12 who had recently become eligible for vaccination and that the results of this study could not be generalized to this age group.
