French Open champion Iga Switech is firmly at the top of the new WTA rankings released on Monday, 4000 points ahead of second-ranked Anett Kontaveit.
Paul, 21, tops the list following the surprise retirement of Australian Ashley Barty in late March.
The only change in the top 20 is the Belarusian Ariana Sabalenka, who finished fifth to Maria Sakkari in Sunday’s final, defeated by Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova at ‘s-Hertogenbosch’.
Neither Sabalenka nor Alexandrova will be at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam event of the year, as Russian and Belarusian players have been banned from competing since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
However, WTA ranking points will not be awarded for the event.
