Rakesh was once again a star for the Gujarat Giants as he beat the Telugu Titans 40-22 in the 48th match of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) season 8 at The Sheraton Grand, Whitefield here on Tuesday. Rakesh scored a Super 10 (16 points) for the Giants while Parvesh Bhainswal scored four tackle points.

Lack of a leader in the defense of the Telugu Titans was the main difference between the teams, with Raider Rajneesh excelling with a 12-point performance. The team is unbeaten in season 8 and is at the bottom of the points table.

Gujarat started without their experienced corner pair of Ravinder Pahal and Girish Ernak. Sandeep Kandola was not at the loss of the Titans, already experienced riders Rohit Kumar and Siddharth Desai, to be replaced by the young Mohammad Shihas.

Not surprisingly, the first half was with the Raiders, with many changes in defense. Gujarat’s Rakesh made an attempt to get all out by making the first super raid (3 points) of the match in the 8th minute. The Giants finally had eight minutes left in the interval to open the seven-point lead.

The Titans’ Rajneesh continued to pick up valuable raid points, but his team failed to support him in defense. Gujarat’s Rakesh has been his best performer in season 8, and he has pulled another three point super raid. Rakesh chose his Super 10 as Gujarat topped the first half with a score of 20-13. The Titans had just one successful tackle throughout the half.

Rakesh and Mahendra Rajput kept getting raid points as the game was played at a slower pace after the restart. Rajneesh won his Super 10 as the Titans felt a potential comeback but Rathan KA got super tackles and raid points to restore parity on the mat. Gujarat kept all the doors closed for the return of the Titans and Parvesh Bhainswal also got a super tackle with a timely dash on Ankit Beniwal.

Gujarat took an 11-point lead with five minutes left and their second win of the season with one more all-out in the final minutes.
