Australia’s federal court on Thursday at 0515 GMT will reveal the reasons for dismissing tennis star Novak Djokovic’s visa revocation challenge, the court said. The reasons will be read out in court in a live online streamed session by Chief Justice James Olsop, a court spokesman said.

Djokovic was deported from Australia on Sunday night, just hours after a court rejected his attempt to stay in the country to play in the Australian Open, where he had hoped to win a record 21st major title.

The first Grand Slam tournament of the year began on Monday.

The 11-day rollercoaster ended with his departure after his visa was canceled on arrival due to lack of proper medical exemption from the Covid-19 vaccination requirements.

His saga has sparked a global debate on the rights of people who choose not to be vaccinated as governments look to protect the community from the coronavirus epidemic.

Djokovic was held in an immigration detention hotel for several days until the court restored his visa on the grounds that he had been treated unfairly at the airport.

The government revoked his visa late last Friday because it could provoke anti-vaccination sentiment if he is allowed to stay. Djokovic challenged the minister’s dismissal on the grounds that he had acted irrationally, but the court dismissed the case.
