12th IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship: Neetu advanced to quarter-finals

2017 Youth World Champion Neetu (48kg) continued her good form and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 12th edition of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships as she defeated Lopez del Arbol of Spain by a unanimous decision on Saturday.

Neetu, who won a gold medal at the Strandja Memorial Boxing Championships in Sofia this year, dominated the proceedings from the start. Bhiwani’s boxer showed unceasing energy and demonstrated his brilliant footwork and precise punching speed.

Neetu advanced to the next two rounds and went ahead with his aggressive approach without giving his opponent any chance and won the match with a convincing 5-0.

His next opponent in the quarterfinals on Monday will be Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova.

Later on Saturday night, Manisha (57kg) will take on Svetlana Steneva of Bulgaria.

On Sunday, six Indian boxers, including Nikhat Zareen, will be in action in the round-of-16 bouts.

Nikhat (52kg) and Shiksha (54kg) will next face Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg and young Asian bronze medalist Yesuzen Oyantsetseg, respectively, while Parveen will compete with former USA Youth Olympic champion Jenza.

Anamika (50kg) will face World Championship bronze medalist Christy Lee Harris of Australia, while Jasmine (60kg) will face Angela Harris of Australia.

Meanwhile, 2017 Youth World Champion Ankushita (66kg) will make her debut in the World Championship against Poland’s Aneta Rigilska.

This year’s event will run until May 20, marking the 20th anniversary of the IBA Women’s World Championships.

In the last edition of the tournament held in Russia in 2019, Indian boxers won one silver and three bronze medals.

The Indian boxers have won 36 medals in the previous 11 editions of the tournament, including nine gold, eight silver and 19 bronze, ranking third behind Russia (60) and China (50). In the last edition held in Russia in 2019, the Indians won one silver and three bronze medals.
